Morning Miracle

The easiest time to connect with your spiritual side is in the morning. Before the busyness of daily life takes over, the mind is more likely to be quiet and receptive to the small, still voice of the divine presence.

To get some spiritual exercise in the morning, try this quick yet effective approach.

Get a copy of a book that offers daily reflections and Bible readings. An excellent offering of this type is Forward Day By Day, an inexpensive, palm-sized pamphlet published quarterly (available at nominal cost at 800-543-1813 or www.forwardmovement.org, or at the nearest Episcopal church, usually free of charge). The daily reflections are the work of a broad cross section of people, writing anonymously; they present a diverse perspective on spiritual issues.

These simple steps take only ten minutes—yet they can transform your spiritual life. They can be done anywhere, at any time, but for best results do them in the morning and sit outdoors or near a window:

1. Read the reflection for the day.
2. Reflect on its message, and how it applies to you.
3. Read the daily readings (if you have time for only one, read the gospel selection).
4. Pray for insight and help regarding whatever is troubling you or those you know.
5. Give thanks for your blessings.
