the Two of Us
Do you believe in a power higher than
yourself in the universe (God)?
If your answer is no, contemplate and explain how the universe
(including yourself) came to be as it is within your own
worldview.
If your answer is yes, that is only a first step.
Consider your relationship with God. How and when do you
consciously relate to God? Although the group worship and
rituals of organized religion can reinforce your beliefs
and faith, alone they cannot provide the spiritual intimacy
that nourishes the human-divine bond.
There is no relationship without interaction. There are
many easy ways to build and expand your relationship with
God, including:
- Prayer—talk
to God and listen to God, just as you would with anyone
else.
- Study—learn
about what God has created, and how it came to be as it
is. Consider all that God does and has done, and how awesome
God is.
- Reflection—consider
how God might be at work in your life, the lives of others
around you, and the world.
- Humility—keep
a healthy perspective on how you fit into the divine order
and plan. Does God need you as much as you need God?
- Compassion—show
reverence for what God has created, and treat God’s
creatures (Nature, other people, and your own self) with
kindness, the way God would treat them.
- Gratitude—express
thankfulness to yourself, God, and others for being alive
and having opportunities to act, even in the face of tragedy
and reversals.
- Honesty—be
honest with yourself about what is and is not working in
your life and in your behavior, and ask God for help getting
and staying on track.
- Behavior
modification—show God you mean business by
finding new and better ways to act when you make mistakes
and hurt yourself and others.
