African
Rhythm
The African Bible Study Method is both easy and effective.
It works well for a session with three to eight people lasting
15–60 minutes. These simple steps never fail to yield
an insight or an inspiration that makes the session worthwhile.
1.
Select a reading from the Bible that is a few sentences long,
such as a reading used at a church service.
2. Begin with a brief prayer said aloud by one of the participants.
3. One person reads the passage aloud. The others listen and
take note of any words or phrases that stand out in their
minds. (It is important that the others do not read the passage,
but listen to it being read aloud.)
4. Each person shares the word or phrase that stood out.
5. A different person reads the passage aloud for a second
time. The others listen and take note of any words or phrases
that stand out in their minds. (Again, it is important that
the others do not read the passage, but listen to it being
read aloud.)
6. Each person shares the word or phrase that stood out, and
why this passage might be relevant in his/her life right now.
7. A third person reads the passage aloud for a third time.
The others listen and take note of any words or phrases that
stand out in their minds. (Again, it is important that the
others do not read the passage, but listen to it being read
aloud.)
8. Each person shares the word or phrase that stood out, and
why this passage might be relevant in his/her community (faith
community, country, or world) right now.
9. At the end of the session, each person takes a turn and
offers a brief, spoken prayer for the person on his/her right.
